Changan Oshan 520

2026-10-04 05:30:00

The Changan Oshan 520 is a compact fully electric sedan tailored specifically for the urban mobility and fleet market. Jointly developed through an in-depth collaboration between Changan Automobile, CATL, and its subsidiary CAES, this model represents a strategic addition to Changan’s commercial new energy vehicle (NEV) line-up. Powered by battery-swapping technology, the Oshan 520 aims to eliminate range anxiety and ease operating cost burdens for urban taxi and e-hailing drivers.

Model Overview

Positioned in the compact electric sedan segment, the Oshan 520 measures 4,770 mm in length, 1,840 mm in width, and 1,470 mm in height, with a 2,765 mm wheelbase.

Market Tags: Battery-swappable pure electric sedan, fleet-dedicated mobility, high-efficiency energy replenishment, economical family sedan.

Key Selling Points: The standout highlight of the Oshan 520 is its compatibility with CATL's "Chocolate" battery swapping solution, enabling a complete battery swap in approximately two minutes. This rapid turnaround drastically cuts vehicle downtime for commercial fleets while supporting the "Battery as a Service" (BaaS) vehicle-battery separation model, significantly lowering the initial upfront purchase barrier for buyers.

Market Positioning: Primarily targeted at commercial fleet operations (taxis and e-hailing services), while also appealing to cost-conscious private buyers and families looking for high value-for-money and low running costs.

Development History

Background: As EV adoption accelerates across public transit and shared mobility sectors, conventional plug-in charging often suffers from long waiting times and station bottlenecks during peak hours. In response, Changan Automobile and CATL officially initiated their battery-swapping venture in late 2024, giving birth to the Oshan 520 as the partnership's first production model.

Key Milestones:

22 November 2024: Changan Automobile, CATL, and CAES signed a strategic cooperation agreement in Chongqing; the Oshan 520 made its official debut and entered mass production.

May 2025: The Oshan 520 surpassed 1,000 unit deliveries, marking its full-scale commercial roll-out in the public mobility sector.

2026: The model saw continued deployment alongside expanding battery-swapping infrastructure across multiple cities, solidifying its role in urban green transport ecosystems.

Market Performance

Competitive Landscape: The Oshan 520 competes in the fiercely contested compact EV sedan segment against mainstream models like the BYD Qin PLUS EV. Its key competitive edge lies in the operational efficiency delivered by battery swapping, making it an exceptionally compelling proposition for high-frequency e-hailing operations.

User Reputation: Commercial drivers and fleet operators widely praise the sheer convenience of its two-minute battery swap. Furthermore, the generous rear legroom and cabin space afforded by its 2,765 mm wheelbase elevate the passenger experience, earning it a reputation as a well-rounded vehicle that balances commercial productivity with passenger comfort.

Core Technologies

Powertrain: Driven by a high-efficiency permanent magnet synchronous electric motor producing a peak output of 105 kW. The powertrain is specifically tuned for smooth, progressive throttle response from a standstill and exceptional energy efficiency in stop-and-go city traffic.

Battery Swapping Tech: Fully compatible with CATL's Chocolate battery-swapping ecosystem, accommodating standardised battery pack exchanges. It supports the vehicle-battery separation framework, enabling buyers to purchase the car without the battery pack and significantly reducing capital expenditure via a battery leasing model.

Driving Range: Fitted with a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, delivering a CLTC-rated electric range of up to 515 km—more than adequate to sustain a full day of non-stop taxi or e-hailing duties.

Interior Space & Chassis: Leveraging its 2,765 mm wheelbase, the cabin offers optimised space packaging. The chassis structure has also been specially reinforced for high-mileage commercial duties, ensuring robust long-term durability under heavy daily usage.

Future Plans

Key future development priorities for the Oshan 520 include:

Infrastructure Expansion: Working alongside CAES and energy partners to steadily increase the network density of battery-swapping stations, enhancing energy replenishment accessibility for fleet operators.

Product Refinement: Implementing iterative upgrades based on fleet driver feedback, focusing on hard-wearing cabin materials and smart connectivity features.

Commercial Model Expansion: Further expanding tailored financial packages for the vehicle-battery separation scheme to lower capital entry barriers across the broader passenger transport and mobility sectors.
